Aumale, a market town roughly the size of Cuckfield, is situated 40 miles inland from Dieppe and Rouen, 25 miles west of Amiens and 80 miles from Paris. It lies on the western bank of the valley which slopes down to the small fast-following river Dresle as it snakes through the lower part of the town, marking the boundary between Normandy and Picardy. It is surrounded by rolling hills, valleys and beautiful woods and forests.

The first recorded reference to Aumale is in 988 and, unlike Cuckfield, Aumale remains the administrative and social centre for the immediate area.

The village is dominated by the huge Church of Sts Peter and Paul at the head of the Place des Marches. The elegant 18th Century houses, the Butter Market and the half-timbered Mouton Gras Inn line the Boulevard des Fontaines.

The Butter Market houses the lively market of local produce - cheese, honey, fruit and flowers. Aumale also has several annual fairs, plus special exhibitions of antiques, ephemera and agriculture at regular intervals.

Cultural and social clubs include photography, music, scrabble and patch-working. Aumale is a very sporty place: archery, football, tennis, swimming, cycling and handball to name just a few of the activities. Over the past years strong ties have developed between our veteran soccer teams - les Anciens d'Aumale and the Cuckfield Pacemakers.
