Karlstadt

Karlstadt is in northern Bavaria, 80 miles east of Frankfurt. To the north is Spessart Forest, while the town itself stands on the banks of the River Main with a line of hills at its back. In size Karsltadt is comparable to Lewes. It was founded in the year 1200 by the Prince-Bishop of Wurzburg and little seems to have changed in the Old Town since walled, free of all but essential traffic, and an architectural gem.

There are lovely paths and cycle tracks along the river (not to mention rowing!) and excellent walks with superb views from the hills behind Karlstadt.

Karlstadt is in the Franken wine-growing district. There are "wine villages" all around. The firm, white-fleshed variety of asparagus is a widely-grown local speciality.

Just 20 kms away is the exquisite city of Wurzburg - small enough to be intimate and friendly, but large enough to have all the amenities. For music lovers, there is the annual summer Mozart Festival (lesser mortals are also tolerated). There are the fabulous Baroque ceilings by Tiepolo in the Residenz.
