Museum talk: "Ralph Follet Wigram, CMG, and the Churchill Connection"
Hugh Axton, historian, will take us on a journey of discovery of the interesting life of Ralph Wigram, his marriage to Ava Bodley, his diplomatic career and association with and help he gave to Winston Churchill in preparing his warning of the Nazi menace, his premature death in December 1936 and burial in Cuckfield churchyard. Hugh also recalls Ava Wigram's subsequent marriage to Sir John Anderson in 1941 when he was Lord President of the Council and a member of the War Cabinet, Ava later becoming Viscountess Waverly. Scarecrow Festival at Holy Trinity Primary School
Scarecrow Festival 13th and 14th June Holy Trinity Primary School in Cuckfield. We are inviting all families, residents, businesses, clubs and societies to take part by creating a scarecrow to be displayed within our extensive 6 acre school grounds; these will form a trail for visitors to explore. It is free to enter a scarecrow for the trail. The event is very popular, in previous years we have had over 80 amazing creative scarecrows adorning the trail. All funds raised from this event will benefit the school, and both Holy Trinity Church and Cuckfield Pre School Playgroup, who will be serving refreshments. The style, pose or character of your scarecrow(s) is completely up to you. Be as imaginative as you like! However we do recommend a waterproof layer between your chosen stuffing and clothing to make your scarecrow more durable and protect it from the weather; all we ask is that you also provide a stand or fixing for display and a brief note of your details in a weatherproof form to post alongside your scarecrow. You are welcome to leave business cards or flyers next to your scarecrow. All visitors will receive a list of exhibitors and will vote for their favourite scarecrows. Scarecrows must be completed and delivered to the school the week commencing 8th June and no later than Thursday 11th June to allow us to place them in their allocated position along the trail. NSPCC Village Open Gardens
NSPCC Village Open Gardens afternoon will be on Sunday 28 June from 2-6. There will be at least 9 lovely gardens to wander around including some not open previously, home-made teas and plants for sale. Programmes will be available from Wealden Stores in advance or from any of the gardens on the day - £5 per person ( children free). Gardens will be well signed from the center of the village.
