Chemicals Expert to talk about pollution and health risks of fracking in Sussex
In The Old School

Distinguished Australian Scientist Dr Mariann Lloyd-Smith will be here to talk to us and answer our questions about the scientific evidence on fracking, and its impacts on environment and communities.

Mariann Lloyd-Smith is Senior Advisor to the Australian National Toxics Network and IPEN. She has 20+ years' experience in chemicals policy and waste management. She was a member of the UN Expert Group on Climate Change and Chemicals. She co-authored Australia's national management plans for hazardous waste, and has presented the findings to governments and communities across Australia, UK and Europe.

Trained as a negotiator in chemical disputes, she has helped residents with their negotiations over contaminated land and has participated in the international negotiating committees (INCs) for the Stockholm, Rotterdam and Basel Conventions, the Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety and the Strategic Approach to International Chemical Management (SAICM).

In Cuckfield, she will discuss what is known about the industry's chemical use, the current evidence of chemical releases to air and water, increases in methane emissions, and the problems of dealing with the related wastes. Introduction to Mindfulness Workshop
Introduction to Mindfulness Workshop Our one-day 'Introduction to Mindfulness' workshops introduce participants to the key principles of living mindfully, offering some basic practices to help cultivate mindfulness in daily life. As well as an experiential introduction to each of the core practices taught on the eight-week MBSR course, we explore where mindfulness comes from, as well as some of the latest scientific evidence for its effectiveness. Participants are also pointed to ways they can begin to develop their own practice. These workshops offer an opportunity for those curious about mindfulness or considering an eight-week MBSR course to find out more. The workshop is led by co-author of The Mindful Manifesto, Ed Halliwell and will run from 10am-5pm at The Old School, Cuckfield. Coffee and tea will be available on arrival and a light vegetarian lunch will be provided. The cost is £85. Pre-registration is essential for this workshop.
