2008 Show report

Saturday 6 September 2008

Rain? What rain? There she blows!

Preparations for the third Cuckfield Village Show started wet and ended wet, however, despite the atrocious weather, the number and quality of exhibits was up on last year and these were really well spread across the classes.  We were very pleased this year that floral art attracted some great exhibits and that entries in the junior classes more than doubled.

With high winds and heavy showers, we had to make some hasty last minute changes to the layout, especially when all the gazebos started taking off but we managed to squeeze visitors, exhibits and the Mid Sussex Brass Band into the marquee which all made for a really cosy atmosphere!  Only the poor WI were left stranded across the field, but they were well visited and their hot drinks and cakes were unsurprisingly very popular.

Red hot chilli peppers What do you think it is? Thank goodness, I'm starving

Once all exhibitors had dodged the rain drops and set up their exhibits, it was down to the serious business of judging and once again the judges faced a difficult task as the standard was so high.  But winners were chosen and prizes awarded.

Better luck next time, Aoife

Best in Show winner was Bridget Rice who beat her own daughter Aoife into second place!  Full results can be found below.

We were delighted that the village came out in force to support us, not just by exhibiting and visiting the show, but so many of the businesses sponsored classes, gave raffle prizes and placed adverts in the program.  It is likely that we will not break even this year, but the event is for the village and the hard work by all the Cuckfield Society committee and helpers was justified by the wonderful atmosphere on the day.  Plans are afoot for the next show and details will be coming soon to this website.
